Manjusri is the bodhisattva associated with development of enlightened wisdom, doctrine and awareness. Buddhists have identified Manjusri as "the oldest and most significant mythic bodhisattva in the Mahayana tradition. The Lotus Sutra assigns him a paradise called Vimala, which according to the Avatamsaka Sutra is located in the east. Ma�jusri is depicted as a male bodhisattva wielding a flaming sword in his right hand, representing the realization of transcendent wisdom which cuts down ignorance and duality. The scripture supported by the lotus held in his left hand is a Praj�aparamita sutra, representing his attainment of ultimate realization from the blossoming of wisdom.
The deity is depected seated on a beautiful lotus 'pitha'. In Buddhism, Manjushri is the Bodhisattva (Buddha-to-be) of Wisdom - the embodiment of the omniscient wisdom of all enlightened beings. His left hand is in the gesture of teaching Dharma and shown holding the stem of a lotus flower that supports the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra. With the flaming sword or 'khadaga' in his right hand, Manjushri is conceived as vanquishing ignorance and eliminating darkness with the power of knowledge and wisdom. He bestows wisdom, intelligence, and the power of eloquence, linquistics and memory. Revered as the patron of arts and sciences, he is traditionally invoked by writers.
