Guan Yin Goddess of Mercy Perfume Stand
This is a beautiful golden representation of Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy and Compassion) seating serenely in lotus position against an ornate backrest encrusted with jewels. Chinese phrases of encouragement and protection are embossed on the reverse side of the backrest. In her left hand is a vase, symbolizing her pouring compassion and loving kindness to the world. Commonly known to the Chinese as Guan Yin as the Goddess of Mercy (or Kwan Yin, Quan Yin, Kuan Yin), she is the most popular of the deity on Chinese altars, trusted and loved by all Chinese people. Her name is short for Guan Shi Yin. Guan means to observe, watch, or monitor; Shi means the world; Yin means sounds, specifically sounds of those who suffer. Thus, Guan Yin is a compassionate being who watches for, and responds to, the people in the world who cry out for help. Many Buddhist scriptures state that one can invoke Guan Yin's assistance by simply calling out her name; people feel that this bodhisattva is very approachable. "One Who Hears the Cries of the World", she hears those who call upon her and helps them even to lead them to the peace and happiness of the Western Heaven. Guan Yin is a savior with boundless compassion, a comforter of the sick, lost, senile, frightened and unfortunate.
Guan Yin's main attraction for people lies in her efforts to eliminate suffering and to make people live in peace and harmony. This kind of immediate benefit and the ability to receive protection or help simply by calling the bodhisattva's name, similar to children receiving an instant reply when calling their mother, have contributed to Guan Yin's great popularity.
