Roughly, the literal translation of the above is “Hail! Appear, O Healer, O Healer, O Great Healer, O King of Healing!” with the optional “Tadyata” as an introductory “thus”.
The short mantra basically means “May the many sentient beings who are sick, quickly be freed from sickness. And may all the sicknesses of beings never arise again.”
A deeper interpretation however, holds the belief that the Medicine Buddha mantra is contains the remedy of the whole graduated path to enlightenment. The first Bekandze removes all the problems of body and mind, including old age and disease; the second Bekandze discard the cause of problems and Maha Bekandze eliminates even the subtle imprints left on the consciousness by disturbing thoughts. The whole graduated path from the beginning up to the supreme happiness of full enlightenment is contained in the Medicine Buddha mantra.
In the words of the Venerable Lama Zopa Rinpoche: “The Medicine Buddha mantra can help you liberate numberless sentient beings from the vast oceans of suffering and bring them to enlightenment, so you should recite it with absolute trust in the Medicine Buddha, knowing that he will completely take care of your life and heal you in every way and that he is always with you—in your heart, on your crown and right there in front of you. There is not one second that the Medicine Buddha does not see or have compassion for you.”
