The Kalachakra Mandala is a complex two dimensional image that represents the three-dimensional 5 floor palace of the Kalachakra deity as seen from the top. The image contains all the elements of Buddhist teaching. The 5 storeys of the residence of Kalachakra deity and the retinue of deities surrounding him represent the 5 levels of body, speech, mind, pristine consciousness, and great bliss. The colors of the four directions correspond with the colors of the four faces of Kalachakra; black (Wind) in front, red (Fire) to his right, white (Water) to his left, and yellow (Earth) at the back. Surrounding the palace and its grounds are the protective forces of the 5 Elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Space. The outermost circle of the mandala represents the holding environment for all that that takes place within its embrace. Balance, peace, harmony, compassion, wisdom and loving-kindness prevails in this cosmic setting.
Kalachakra means Wheel of Time, as "Kala" is Time and "Chakra" (or Cakra) is Wheel in Sanskrit. The Kalachakra deity represents omniscience, as everything is under the influence of time, and he is time and therefore knows all. A mandala is a sacred space, typically a square or circular chart with geometric designs which reveals some inner truth about you or the world around you. In Sanskrit, mandala means both circle and center and it symbolizes the cosmos and everything within; another meaning for 'mandala' is wholeness. As circular representations of spiritual truths, they are intended to impart peace and healing to all beings as well as to the planet. The Kalachakra mandala is thus dedicated to peace and physical balance, both for individual and for the world, thanks to the deities, abstract pictographs, and the Sanskrit syllables that comprises the mandala's design.

This short documentary was filmed during Rinpoche's construction of the Kalachakra Sand Mandala at the University of the Arts / Gershman Y in Philadelphia, October 26 to November 22, 2009. He is the Spiritual Director of the Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center of Philadelphia.
