Tai Sui in Lunar Year of Ding You Fire Rooster 2017

In the Chinese mythology, the Grand Duke Jupiter or more commonly known as Tai Sui (太岁) is actually a position in the celestial heavens which is in charge of the world's affairs for a particular year, i.e. determining the annual fortunes of all of us mortal beings. The Taoist calendar is organized into a series of twelve "earthly branches" which rotate according to the five elements, resulting in a 60 year cycle. Hence, there are 60 heavenly generals who would rotate to take up this almighty position. A person's happiness, health, luck and fortune are all under his jurisdiction. It actually serves as a reminder to avoid misdeeds, to take good care of health and to carry out more charitable activities so that misfortune will not strike. He will note the good deeds and misdeeds of people.

Besides giving the necessary blessing and acting as a guardian to the Mortals, each different Tai Sui is used to mark the Lunar Year. In 2017, General Tang Jie assumes duty to replace General Guan Zhong who was reigned supreme in 2016.

The Great General Tang Jie, Tai Sui of 2017 Year of Ding You Fire Rooster

General Tang Jie (唐杰), the Ding You year Tai Sui was born during the Tang Dynasty at An Xiang, Hubei. From an early age, he had an interest in martial arts, practicing it diligently till he became very strong. Not surprisingly, Tang Jie became a royal graduate in military affairs after his Imperial examination. The Great General brought stability and peace to the region when he managed to annihilate bandits including their leader who were terrorizing the people. He thus won himself favors from the Imperial Court, including gifts of a robe and silver and was widely applauded for his merits and virtues.

Another more scientific school of thought simply attributes the Tai Sui phenomena to the movement of Jupiter (hence the name Grand Duke Jupiter), which affects the magnetic field around us. The energy field of Jupiter is similar to the rays of the Sun, it can be helpful and it can be harmful to human being. This explanation usually bodes well with the western audience already educated with zodiac systems based on stars and planets.

Yet others have combined both schools of thoughts into one. It is believed the term "Tai Sui" is derived from the "Tai Sui Calendar System" of ancient China. "Sui" originally referred to Jupiter (木星), which was considered the leader of all stars. But it was quite inconvenient to calculate the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches based on the movement of Jupiter, so people created an imaginary star moving directly opposite to Jupiter and named it "Tai Sui". As time passes, the Tai Sui Star was personified and transformed from an imaginary star to a deity who has absolute command over worldly affairs.

The position of Tai Sui in the recent past and coming years are as follows:

Whatever your belief – whether Tai Sui is a deity or a phantom star (a “body of energy”), it pays to heed the location of the Tai Sui of the year so as not to inadvertently disturb/offend him, or it.

Tai Sui is disturbed when you carry out major works such as construction works or felling of trees where he is residing for the year. You can offend Tai Sui in numerous ways, the main ones being “facing” him and also for being born on a certain date! Facing his direction for a prolonged period like working or sleeping will incur his wrath and based on your Chinese Zodiac Animal, you may be in a position that “offended” Tai Sui, or in Chinese “Fan Tai Sui”.

In year 2017, those who Fan Tai Sui are people who are born in the year of the Rooster, Rabbit, Horse and Rat. The Rabbit’s offence is the most serious of all; the Rooster whose sector is playing host to Tai Sui is in a slightly better off as its position can be used to garner the support of Tai Sui, whilst the Horse and Rat are the least serious. Although Tai Sui is considered to be one of the afflictions of the year, it does provide some benevolence if its location is also influenced by a favourable flying star. Provided the ground where Tai Sui sits is not disturbed, the influence of Tai Sui can bring wealth and prosperity, but it is still an affliction and care must be given to the location where it resides.

An offended Tai Sui will bring you misfortunes, from mild to the severe kind. In 2017, year of Ding You Fire Rooster, the position of Tai Sui is at West 2 ranging from 262.6° - 277.5°. Thus those born in the year of the Rooster which sits on the same cardinal location of Tai Sui are said to be directly afflicted with Tai Sui whilst the Rabbit which is located in East 2 is in direct conflict with Tai Sui. Additionally, the Rat (North 2) and Snake (South 2) are indirectly in conflict with Tai Sui as indicated in the chart below.

What this means is that you have incurred the wrath of Tai Sui (or in some kind of energy conflict with the ruling star, if you like) and remedial steps must be taken to appease him and preventive measures carried out to avoid further offending him. Those who Fan Tai Sui generally will have a not-so-smooth year, all matters relating to your career, health, relationships, etc will be affected.

The basic guidelines to heed are:

  • Do not sit facing or sleep with your head pointing to the direction of Tai Sui.
  • Avoid construction work including repair work, in the Tai Sui location. If this sector is disturbed, those staying in the house will have a tough year ahead with a lot of arguments and sicknesses. If there is no choice but a serious need to work in this area, then avoid starting and ending in the here. One can start in other sectors.
  • Appease him by placing his pet, the Pi Yao in the affected sector or just wear the Pi Yao as an amulet.
  • Carry protective amulets – sacred talisman from temples, Pi Yao, Tai Sui Image or Tai Sui Mantra. Everyone should carry one of this, whether or not your horoscope sign is in conflict with Tai Sui in a particular year because the Tai Sui changes direction every year and you may unknowingly sleep or sit facing him, which will also incur his wrath. Just think of it as a 24/7 bodyguard!
  • Perform An Tai Sui or Pacifying Tai Sui ritual to neutralize influences and blessings, protection and good fortune throughout the year. You are advised to go through a prayer session at a Taoist temple at the start of the year to ask for blessings and then go back to thank him for his kindness at the end of the year.
  • Get help from your Zodiac Secret Friends and Allies to overcome challenges, protect against harm and provide great strength for persistency.
