Description

This adorable amulet comprises a miniature golden representation of a Moktak which is a Korean-style Buddhist wooden fish. It is inscribed with the Om syllable and comes complete with a cute little mallet. OM, often referred to as “the sound of the Universe” is the first syllable spoken before most prayers because it purifies the atmosphere and calms the soul.

The actual wooden fish (Muyu in Chinese, Mu 木 means wood, and Yu 魚 means fish) is a hollow, wooden percussion instrument used by Mahayana Buddhist practitioners to pace the rhythm of chants. It is carved from a block of wood into the basic shape of a fish with a wide mouth, and then its interior is hollowed to provide the beautiful resonance when struck. There are many Buddhist legends and stories that involve the fish and how it became important enough to be the animal carved on a wooden block. One of the reasons could be due to the belief that the fish which always has its eyes open, never sleeps, thus symbolizing wakefulness and awareness – basic tenets of Buddhism. There are two types of wooden fish: one is the large Muyu, which is placed on a cushion and usually used in Chinese or Japanese ceremonies whilst the Korean Moktak is the smaller handheld ones that come with a handle.

Whatever its origins, the unmistakable and hypnotic sound and the sight of this simple percussion instrument inspire us to practice Buddha’s simple way of life to dispel negative karma which in turn eliminates sufferings and problems.
