Description
Ancient teachings tell us that merely seeing the Medicine Buddha, or even seeing an image of the Medicine Buddha, or hearing the name of the Medicine Buddha, can confer inconceivable benefits. Lama Tashi Namgyal said, “If one meditates on the Medicine Buddha, one will eventually attain enlightenment, but in the meantime, one will experience an increase in healing powers both for oneself and others and a decrease in physical and mental illness and suffering.”
Medicine Buddha is one of many Buddhas who have attained a state of perfect enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings. He is known as the ”Lord of the Medicaments”. The holy body of Medicine Buddha symbolizes the omniscient wisdom and compassion as vast as limitless space. This is especially associated with the healing of both mental and physical suffering. He is the harbinger of good health and success.
The showcased Buddha statue is made of brass. The Medicine Buddha is sitting on a lotus throne and his right hand is outstretched towards the ground over his right knee in the gesture called supreme generosity. In it, he holds the blooming myrobalan, or arura – the plant that represents all the best medicines. His left hand is in the meditation mudra – rested in his lap, palm upward and holding a pot that contains the nectar of immortality. All these signify the eradication of suffering especially the suffering of illnesses.
